The Office for Nuclear Regulation teamed up with the Gender Identity Research and Education Society (GIRES) to raise awareness within the nuclear industry of transgender issues.
During an ONR-hosted industry conference, HR and security professionals heard from husband and wife, Bernard and Terry Reed, who founded GIRES in 1997 due to their personal experience as parents supporting a trans woman.
ONR has now become a corporate member of GIRES to ensure expert advice is available on any issues relating to gender variance.
Delegates at the annual Personnel Security Industry Day also heard from guest speaker Larna Gallier who offered a personal insight from the viewpoint of a woman of trans history.
The event was hosted by ONR’s Security programme which regulates security arrangements throughout the civil nuclear industry. This includes the vetting of permanent staff and contractors involved with nuclear materials or sensitive nuclear information.
