We note today’s Department for Energy Security and Net Zero announcement that the Wylfa site in Anglesey, north Wales, is the government's initial preferred location for a future large-scale nuclear project.
We will liaise with government in our role as the independent regulator to ensure the highest standards of safety, security and safeguards within the industry and for the public.
The UK has a highly respected regulatory structure and we have been preparing for the expansion of new nuclear in this country for some time.
Our work is ongoing for any required regulation of new technologies and development models, including much greater collaboration with international regulators to leverage technical assessments undertaken by them, as we strive to continue to make timely but also robust regulatory decisions.
We continue to work with all stakeholders to help build a resilient and capable future nuclear workforce and recently launched its new framework for early regulatory engagement, enabling technology vendors and development companies to seek key advice ahead of entering formal regulatory processes.
We will continue to engage across the new nuclear sector through every forum so that its independent regulation remains proportionate as we work to retain and enhance public trust in the industry.
