We regulate nuclear safety on five licensed sites and several non-licensed sites that support the UK’s fleet of nuclear-powered submarines. The licensed sites are operated under the auspices of the MOD by contractors, who hold the site licences at:
- Devonport Royal Dockyard, Plymouth
- BAE Systems Marine, Barrow
- Rolls Royce Submarines Limited (RRSL)
- Rosyth Royal Dockyard, Fife
Activities cover nuclear core manufacturing and testing at Rolls Royce, submarine construction and commissioning at BAE Systems, submarine repair/refit/defuelling at Devonport Royal Dockyard, and dismantling at Rosyth.
We also regulate on sites that are operated directly by the MOD and are therefore exempt from licensing under the Nuclear Installations Act 1965. These sites are authorised by the MOD and include:
- HM Naval Base Devonport and No. 5 Basin at Devonport Royal Dockyard
- HM Naval Base Clyde (the operational base and nuclear weapons depot for the UK's fleet of Trident nuclear deterrent submarines)
- a range of submarine Operational Berths around the UK, including Southampton, Portsmouth, Portland, Devonport, and Clyde.
