Key Findings, Inspector's Opinions and Reasons for Judgements Made

The documentation sampled was found to have been updated to reflect the Ionising Radiations Regulations 2017, apart from one document which was raised with the Accredited Health Physicist.

Through discussions with Magnox Ltd employees and Accredited Health Physicist’s on the Wylfa Nuclear Licensed site, it was noted that there was an appropriate safety culture with individuals suitability qualified for their respective roles.

From inspecting several facilities on the Wylfa licensed site, the areas and housekeeping were found to be in an adequate state. There was also appropriate accountancy and suitable storage arrangements for radioactive substances.

On the day of the inspection the last flask of Magnox fuel left the site, significantly reducing the radiological risk at Wylfa site.

Compliance with the requirements of the Ionising Radiations Regulations 2017 was judged overall to be adequate. ONR advised on a number of minor areas for improvement in order to achieve a better alignment with published relevant good practice.

Conclusion of Intervention

Compliance with the Ionising Radiation Regulations 2017 was judged to be of an adequate standard with some minor opportunities identified for further improvement, which were discussed and agreed with the licensee.
