Key findings, inspector's opinions and reasons for judgement made
Bristol University, and the part of Bristol medical School which uses the services provided by the university, transports nearly all its radioactive material/waste as exempt packages (99.9%). There have been transports of excepted material, but none in the last five years.
The use and management of radioactive material is well controlled. Much thought has been put into how to use and transport radioactive material safely. There is an effective management system in place, establishing policies and objectives, and the easy recovery of relevant records and local rules.
Conclusion
The facilities and their management of class 7 goods, and the supporting management system and support from qualified people meet the requirements of CDG'09. This is a low risk enterprise; the greatest risk is the pedestrian transport of packages through the public environment. However, adequate steps are taken at this time.
Standard of compliance with CDG'09 is reflected in the RAG rating.I believe the university faculties seen are low risk for transport activities, and unless circumstances change or there is an incident do not require a compliance inspection for five years.
