ONR gains National Equality Standard

We are delighted to be recognised for our commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion by gaining accreditation to the National Equality Standard (NES).

This is a great achievement for ONR and is all down to the dedication, passion and hard work of our people who are committed to strengthening our culture of diversity and inclusion.  The accreditation is clear confirmation that we put our people first and value the diversity of ideas, views and contributions from all of our people, regardless of their background, experiences or role, something we’re incredibly proud of.

Our journey to accreditation has taken time, having started the process back in 2017 with our initial assessment identifying some areas of improvement.  Having our focus for the next twelve months, we set to work to address the improvements and provided a range of evidence of our diversity work, leading to our successful accreditation towards the end of last year.

Gathering the views of our people through focus groups, supporting diversity events and introducing a new behaviour framework are just some examples of our work -  with a further achievement in becoming an inaugural member of the Nuclear Skills Strategy Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Group, working to address the sector’s skills challenge.

Adriènne Kelbie, ONR’s Chief Executive said: “Equality and inclusion are topics close to my heart – I strongly believe that diverse teams improve decision making, and so safety in the nuclear industry, so I couldn’t be more proud that ONR has received the National Equality Standard.  It demonstrates the commendable behaviours and practices of our people, our progressive organisational development, and our ambitious aspirations for the future.

“Working with NES has been eye-opening but we’re not complacent.  We know what we’re doing well, and also where we need to focus our attention next, so we can continue to make progress, be recognised, and set the standard as a regulator and employer that puts its people first.”

NES is supported by the Home Office and the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) and the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) was involved in its development and launch. NES has become the accepted standard for inclusiveness in business across the UK.
