International safety meeting in Brussels

The Office for Nuclear Regulation's Chief Executive and Chief Nuclear Inspector, Mark Foy joined the 51st meeting of the European Nuclear Safety Regulators Group (ENSREG) in Brussels.

The event was attended by senior representatives from 17 member states and observer nations, which include the UK, Ukraine, Switzerland and Norway.

Members again expressed their concerns at the risk to civil nuclear facilities in Ukraine and repeated calls for the de-occupation and demilitarisation of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant.

Mark said: “In updating our position statement regarding Ukraine, I was pleased that ENSREG members agreed to work with their governments and permanent missions to the IAEA in preparation for the Spring 2023 review meeting of the Convention on Nuclear Safety to produce a common position on Ukraine, Russia's illegal occupation of the country, and the risks from widespread and targeted attacks to the safety of nuclear facilities and the integrity of the electrical infrastructure in Ukraine.”
