A logistics company has promptly rectified shortfalls in their provision of risk assessments for the transport of radioactive materials following an intervention by The Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR).
The failings were identified by ONR during a routine compliance inspection at Streamline Shipping Group Limited's site in Aberdeen on 31 January.
It revealed how radioactive materials had previously been moved which were not identified in their risk assessment documentation which is required under the Ionising Radiations Regulations 2017 (IRR17), Reg 8.
Shortfalls were also found against IRR17, Reg 7, due to Streamline Shipping Group Limited transporting certain materials without the required consent.
ONR served an improvement notice on Streamline Shipping Group Limited on 7 February under IRR17, Reg 8.
The regulations require dutyholders to carry out suitable and sufficient risk assessments before transporting radioactive material to identify the measures they need to take to restrict exposure to ionising radiation.
There were no consequences to the public or the environment as a result of the shortfall.
Streamline Shipping Group Limited is an international logistics and haulage company with headquarters in Aberdeen.
Christopher Jones, an ONR principal inspector, said: “Our inspection found there were unmanaged risks to the public and employees if the company continued to transport radioactive material without the correctly updated radiation risk assessment.
“We therefore required Streamline Shipping Group Limited to rectify these shortfalls as a matter of urgency and bring themselves back into compliance for the transportation of radioactive dangerous goods which they have done in a positive manner."
Streamline Shipping Group Ltd has recently provided ONR with an updated radiation risk assessment which meets the requirements of IRR17 and so the improvement notice has been closed.
A formal letter was also issued to the company in respect of non-compliance with IRR17 Reg 7.
