The Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) and the Environment Agency have closed the last 'issue' with the generic design of a nuclear reactor proposed for construction in the UK.
In 2011, the regulators identified 31 issues with EDF Energy and Areva's UK EPR design that had to be addressed as a prerequisite to issuing final acceptance of the generic design.
The closure of issue GI-UKEPR-CC-02 was decided by assessors on 7 December and is confirmed today with the publication of our letter to EDF Energy and Areva.
The regulators will confirm soon whether due process is now complete to decide whether to issue a Design Acceptance Confirmation (in the case of ONR) and a Statement of Design Acceptability (in the case of the Environment Agency).
More information on the 31 issues is available on our dedicated new reactors webpages.
