ONR speaks at international conference on civil nuclear security

Adrian Freer, the Office for Nuclear Regulation’s Deputy Chief Inspector responsible for Civil Nuclear Security, is speaking today at an inaugural ‘International Regulators Conference on Civil Nuclear Security’, being held from 4-6 December in Rockville, Maryland, US.

The speech is on the subject of “Personnel Trustworthiness and Reliability”. It will outline the processes and procedures employed by the UK regulator and the civil nuclear industry in the UK, to ensure the trustworthiness and reliability of personnel with access to nuclear facilities and sensitive nuclear information.

The event, sponsored by the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission, is the first of its kind, and follows the US commitment, made at the 2012 Nuclear Security Summit in the Republic of Korea, to host the conference. The conference is intended to enhance awareness across the international regulatory community of the importance of comprehensive national regulatory security programmes. It will also enable nuclear regulators to build relationships with counterpart national regulatory entities responsible for nuclear and radioactive materials security.

Key note speakers at the conference being held at the Hilton Washington DC in Rockville, Maryland, include Yukiya Amano, director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency; John O.Brennan, assistant to President Obama for homeland security and counterterrorism; Ambassador Glyn T. Davies, US special representative for North Korea Policy; and Mark Weatherford, deputy undersecretary for cyber security at the US Department of Homeland Security.
