As a nuclear regulator, we remain concerned about the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and any risk to civil nuclear facilities.
On Tuesday, 4 October, The European Nuclear Safety Regulators Group (ENSREG) held a fourth extraordinary meeting to assess the nuclear safety situation in Ukraine, particularly in relation to the safety of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant.
In a statement, ENSREG firmly supported the efforts of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General towards nuclear safety, security, and safeguards in Ukraine and asked for the IAEA presence at the Zaporizhzhia plant be reinforced as soon as the security situation on site allows.
ONR shares these concerns about any weakening of the safety level at Zaporizhzhia and remains in close contact with our international counterparts and other global agencies, including the IAEA and the Heads of the European Radiological Protection Competent Authorities (HERCA) and the Western European Nuclear Regulators Association (WENRA).
Also recently, the International Nuclear Regulators’ Association (INRA), which includes ONR, met at last week's International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) General Conference and released their own joint statement.
