The Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) has been in West Africa to support efforts to improve regional security and lead the delivery of an International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) workshop on the topic of design basis threat.
Taking place in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, their government requested the event after recognising that they would benefit from hearing expertise in this area to help with the effective design, implementation and evaluation of physical protection systems.
Burkina Faso is actively seeking to improve the protection of radioactive sources by enhancing its legislation and regulatory activity.
Brian Daly, ONR's Security Delivery Lead for Decommissioning, Fuel and Waste, travelled to Africa for this international engagement as part of our commitment to influence the development of nuclear international guidance and standards.
The week-long event was attended by representatives of the Burkina Faso government, the Autorité nationale de Radioprotection et de Sûreté Nucléaire (Burkina Faso's nuclear regulator), national intelligence agency, police, military and customs.
Brian was joined by Ahmed Al-Salman, Head of Nuclear Facilities Security at the Jordan Nuclear Regulatory Commission JNRC.
Brian said: "Our effective engagement on a worldwide platform is important to influence the development of international standards and guidance for safety, security and safeguards to promote and sustain high standards."
