Key changes to RIDDOR incident notification process

The Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) today launches an updated process for incident notification under the Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 2013 (RIDDOR).

This change legally requires RIDDOR incidents that occur on relevant sites to be reported directly to ONR via its dutyholder portal.

RIDDOR incidents on ONR-regulated sites have previously been reported to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).

The new process applies to dutyholders operating on:

  • GB nuclear sites;
  • New nuclear build sites;
  • Authorised defence sites; and
  • Defence nuclear sites.

The Notify ONR webpage has been revised to reflect this change.

ONR has also developed new guidance on the revised arrangements (ONR-RIO-GD-006), reaffirming its reporting expectations. Updated RIDDOR incident notification forms are available for registered and unregistered dutyholder portal users.

The new process will help ensure a consistent approach to incident notification, strengthening ONR’s regulation and wider nuclear site health and safety.
